Activity 2 - Party model

The evening party must be a success! Both local and visiting students should enjoy it but the organisers don't want to make a loss. They need to decide how much it will cost, what to charge for tickets and how many they need to sell.

Your task is to develop a spreadsheet model that allows the organisers to explore different options and ask 'what-if' questions such as:

  • what if we use a different venue, band or DJ
  • what if we spend more on promotion
  • what if we sell too many or too few tickets
  • what if we buy in bulk

You should base your model on one of the following examples:

Open model 1 and try it out to see what you can do with it.

  • Items in blue are the different types of cost
  • Cells shaded pink contain example figures. Try changing them to see what happens.

If you want to aim for something more complex, open model 2 and try it out.

  • The model is only for one venue. Could you expand it so that more venues can be compared in the same model?
  • Could you allow for bulk buying where the cost per item is less when you buy more?
